Bowen Consolidated Colliery

The Bowen Consolidated Colliery is a coal mine in Scottville with several original buildings preserved on a large site. The place includes headframes, shaft buildings, a power station, and other industrial structures that show how a mine operated in earlier times.

The mine began operating in 1919 and remained active for almost 50 years before closing in 1962. Its shutdown led to the construction of a new, more mechanized mine nearby that relied on machinery instead of manual labor.

The mining complex shows how people worked underground in the early 1900s and how coal was extracted in this region. The preserved buildings and machinery tell the story of the daily challenges and skills of the miners from that era.

The site is located several kilometers from Collinsville and can be reached by country roads, which requires planning travel time. Many of the original buildings are still standing and invite exploration, so allowing enough time for a visit makes sense.

The mine features an old headframe with four legs, a design from the very early days of Australian mining. This distinctive construction differs sharply from the later A-shaped frames that eventually became the standard.
