Orpheus Island National Park

Orpheus Island National Park spans 1,200 hectares of land, featuring mangrove forests, coral reefs, and diverse marine ecosystems along the Queensland coast.

The island received its name in 1887 from Lieutenant G.E. Richards, commemorating HMS Orpheus, a Royal Navy vessel that sank near New Zealand in 1863.

The Nyawaygi people maintained a deep connection to Goolboddi Island, their name for Orpheus, before European settlers arrived in the region.

Access to the national park requires a 30-minute helicopter journey, with camping facilities available at Yanks Jetty, Pioneer Bay, and South Beach locations.

James Cook University operates a research station on the island, where scientists study marine biology and conduct annual reef restoration workshops.
