Orpheus Island National Park, Marine national park in Queensland, Australia

Orpheus Island National Park is a marine reserve on the Queensland coast that covers about 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres). The island has mangrove forests, coral reefs, and many different habitats for marine animals.

The island was named in 1887 by Lieutenant G.E. Richards after a British Navy vessel that sank in the 1800s. European settlers arrived later and changed how the land was used in the region.

The Nyawaygi people called the island Goolboddi and held deep ties to this place long before European settlers arrived. Visitors can sense this connection to the past while exploring the landscape today.

Getting to the island requires a helicopter or boat, so you need to plan ahead. There are camping spots at several locations, and you should bring water and sun protection since the island is windy and sunny.

A university has set up a research station on the island where scientists work with marine biology and coral studies. This scientific work helps people understand and protect the fragile ecosystems of the island.
