Picnic Bay Jetty, Heritage jetty in Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, Australia.
Picnic Bay Jetty is a concrete pier extending 240 meters into the ocean from the Esplanade, featuring wide timber decking and protective handrails throughout. The structure functions as a hub for fishing, ferry access, and gathering for both residents and visitors.
The current structure was completed in 1959 and represents the third jetty built at this location since the Butler family started ferry services in 1877. This succession reflects the site's long importance as a transport hub for the island.
Student groups have decorated the modern shelter shed with colorful artwork, turning it into a space where local creativity is on display.
The jetty is fully accessible from the Esplanade, with plenty of space to walk and move about comfortably. Wide decking and sturdy handrails make it easy for people of all ages to explore safely.
The pier was saved from planned demolition in 2001 when around 1500 people gathered to demonstrate their support for preserving it. This community action shows how deeply the structure matters to local residents.
