Lihou Reef National Nature Reserve, Marine reserve in Coral Sea Islands Territory, Australia.
The Lihou Reef extends across 8,440 square kilometers, forming a U-shaped atoll with eighteen distinct islets and cays divided between northern and southern rims.
Lieutenant John Lihou discovered the reef on February 23, 1823, while navigating HMS Zenobia from Manila to South America through uncharted waters.
The reserve received recognition as a Ramsar wetland site in 2002, marking its status among internationally significant marine environments.
The reserve contains a solar-powered lighthouse that rises 34 meters high on concrete piles, providing navigation signals visible for 19 nautical miles.
The lagoon spans 100 by 30 kilometers with depths reaching 60 meters, making it the second largest atoll formation in the Coral Sea.
