Vanikoro, Volcanic island in Temotu Province, Solomon Islands
Vanikoro is an island group in Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands, made up of five smaller islands surrounded by a shared coral reef belt. The main islands of Banie, Tevai, Manieve, Nomianu, and Nanuga form a compact geographic system.
The French expedition under La Pérouse ended tragically in 1788 when his ships Boussole and Astrolabe were destroyed on the reefs near this island. This event left deep marks on the region and was later explored through rescue expeditions.
The population of 1,293 inhabitants includes both Melanesian descendants of original settlers and Polynesian migrants from Tikopia, speaking different Oceanic languages.
The region receives over five thousand millimeters of annual rainfall, so visitors should prepare with waterproof gear and rain-resistant materials. Adequate preparation is necessary to handle the wet conditions comfortably.
The area is an important bird sanctuary and home to bird species found nowhere else, such as the Vanikoro monarch and the Vanikoro flying fox. These rare animals are a special draw for nature lovers visiting the islands.
