Necker Island

Necker Island rises 84 meters above sea level with steep cliffs and spans 45 acres of rocky terrain in the Pacific Ocean.

The United States incorporated this remote island during the 1898 annexation of Hawaii, leading to its registration as a historic place in 1988.

The island contains 55 archaeological sites, including religious temples and agricultural terraces, indicating early Hawaiian settlement and ceremonial activities.

Access to Necker Island requires special permits from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and depends on weather conditions.

During nesting season, the island hosts 60,000 seabirds from 16 different species, making it a major wildlife refuge in the Pacific.
