Kalalau Beach, Remote beach in Kauai County, US.

Kalalau Beach is a remote cove at the end of an 11-mile hiking trail along the Na Pali Coast, surrounded by sheer cliffs and thick vegetation. The mile-long sandy shore is backed by a dramatic rock wall and provides access to a fertile river valley behind it.

Ancient Hawaiian communities lived in Kalalau Valley for centuries, growing taro and fishing in productive coastal waters. This early settlement left marks on the landscape through cultivation methods and ways of life that still shape the valley today.

The valley and beach hold profound spiritual meaning in Hawaiian culture, representing the connection between people, nature, and ancestral traditions. Visitors experience this sense of reverence when walking through the cove and surrounding landscape.

Visitors require permits to hike and camp, and must carry all supplies since only basic composting toilets are available at the site. Freshwater sources exist on the beach, but hikers should pack plenty of food and water for the demanding trail.

Ho'ole'a Falls, a freshwater cascade at the western end of the beach, supplies the community of long-term residents living there. This natural spring has made permanent habitation possible in such a remote location and often surprises visitors who discover it.
