Limahuli Garden and Preserve, Botanical garden in Kauai County, United States
Limahuli Garden and Preserve is a botanical garden on the North Shore of Kauai, set within a valley that holds native forest, a mountain stream, and ancient terraced slopes. The section open to the public is a curated part of a larger protected area dedicated to the conservation of native Hawaiian plants.
The valley has been inhabited for many centuries, and the stone terraces and other structures still visible on the slopes reflect a long tradition of farming the land. The garden as an institution was established in 1967 and opened to the public in 1995 with a focus on protecting native plant habitats.
Taro plants are still grown on old lava rock terraces tended by families with deep roots in the valley. Walking past these terraces, visitors can see how food and land have been connected here across many generations.
Booking ahead is recommended since access to the public area is limited to a set number of visitors at a time. The terrain is hilly and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes and carry water for the walk.
Most of the land is off-limits as a protected preserve, yet the public trail passes directly alongside stone structures that are roughly 1,500 years old. These remains are not set apart in a separate zone but sit right within the walking route.
