Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Hanalei Valley, United States
Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge is a 917-acre protected area that stretches across a river valley with steep wooded hills rising over 1,000 feet above the northern shore of Kauai. The terrain provides varied habitats for bird species across different elevations.
The refuge was established in 1972 as part of the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex to protect endangered Hawaiian waterbird species. This creation marked an important step in conservation efforts across the Hawaiian islands.
The refuge maintains traditional taro farming methods that local growers practice to support water management in the wetlands. This agricultural tradition connects old growing techniques with modern conservation in a practical way.
The refuge can be observed from a designated viewpoint near Princeville town center, open Tuesday through Saturday between 9 AM and 3 PM. It is helpful to bring binoculars and a bird guide to identify the different species present.
The refuge uses specially trained detector dogs to locate birds affected by avian botulism in the wetlands. This innovative approach helps particularly with monitoring the uncommon Hawaiian duck species.
