Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Hanalei Valley, United States

Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in the Hanalei Valley on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii, framed by steep forested ridges rising sharply above the valley floor. It consists of wetlands, ponds, and taro fields along the Hanalei River.

The refuge was established in 1972 as part of the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex to protect endangered Hawaiian waterbirds. It has since been managed alongside local taro farmers who continue to work parts of the land.

Taro farming has been practiced in the Hanalei Valley for centuries, and the refuge still supports active cultivation by local growers today. From the overlook, visitors can see the patchwork of flooded taro fields spread across the valley floor below.

The refuge itself is closed to the public, but a roadside overlook near Princeville offers a clear view over the entire valley. Bringing binoculars helps to spot birds and see the taro fields at the far end of the valley floor.

The refuge uses specially trained detector dogs to find birds affected by avian botulism in the wetlands, a method rarely seen in wildlife management. This approach is particularly focused on the Hawaiian duck, known locally as the koloa maoli, one of the rarest waterbirds in the islands.
