Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Hanalei Valley, United States
The 917-acre reserve spans across a river valley with steep wooded hillsides reaching heights of 1,000 feet above the northern shore of Kauai.
The refuge was established in 1972 as part of the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex to protect endangered Hawaiian waterbird species from extinction.
The refuge incorporates traditional taro farming practices that maintain water levels in wetlands, supporting both agriculture and wildlife conservation efforts.
Visitors can observe the refuge from a designated viewpoint near Princeville town center, open Tuesday through Saturday between 9 AM and 3 PM.
The refuge employs detector dogs to locate birds affected by avian botulism, particularly monitoring the vulnerable Hawaiian duck population.
