Nualolo Kai Beach, Ancient Hawaiian beach site on Na Pali Coast, United States
Nualolo Kai Beach is a shoreline on the Na Pali Coast that stretches beneath towering sea cliffs and features a coral reef creating calm waters for swimming and snorkeling. The beach displays ancient stone structures and archaeological remains that testify to earlier settlement.
This location was a thriving fishing settlement from around 600 AD until the early twentieth century, with numerous stone structures marking its occupation. Settlement ended as changing conditions prompted inhabitants to leave the bay.
A traditional Hawaiian temple called Heiau stands at this location, reflecting the spiritual importance the bay held for its early inhabitants. Petroglyphs carved into the lava rocks tell stories of significant moments from the lives of those who lived here.
Access requires a state permit and is only possible by boat, as the historic rope ladder to neighboring settlements no longer exists. Visitors should look for boat tours or kayak expeditions to reach this remote location.
A natural rock formation in the valley wall creates a massive X pattern formed by intersecting volcanic vents in the ancient lava flows. This geological feature is visible from the beach and offers a striking view of the region's volcanic past.
