Tunnels Beach, Protected beach in Kauai County, United States
Tunnels Beach is a protected cove along the north shore of Kauai with a curved shape, golden sand, and lush tropical plants backed by Mount Makana. The underwater reef extends well offshore and creates natural formations visible from the water.
The beach became known through the 1958 filming of South Pacific, which brought visitors to the location. This film appearance helped establish the area as a destination for travelers to Hawaii.
Local residents call this place Makua Beach, a Hawaiian word meaning parent, which shows a deep connection to the land that runs through the community.
Summer months offer the best conditions for snorkeling near the shore, where calm water and good visibility let you see tropical fish and coral formations clearly. Winter brings stronger waves and rougher conditions that make water activities less comfortable.
The name comes from an extensive network of underwater lava tubes and caverns that twist through the offshore reef system. These submerged formations are a rare feature that draws water explorers to look deeper into the reef structure.
