Hanalei Elementary School, Grundschule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Hanalei Elementary School is a single-story wooden building in the Craftsman style built in 1926 located in the town of Hanalei on the island of Kauai. The structure contains five classrooms, features a gently sloping roof with wide eaves, and has a covered porch at the front designed to work with the warm Hawaiian climate.
The school was founded in 1926 when the Department of Public Education expanded schooling in Hanalei, part of a larger movement to extend education across Kauai in the 1920s. The original building was scheduled for demolition but was moved about half a mile down the highway to preserve it when a new school building was constructed nearby.
The school's name comes from the valley where it stands, reflecting the community's deep connection to this place. Its simple wooden structure with a covered porch blends naturally into the local landscape and shows how schools were designed to work with the warm climate and rural life of the time.
The building is located on Kuhio Highway in Hanalei and is easily accessible on foot in a quiet, walkable area of town. Visitors can view and photograph the exterior from the street, though the site remains an active school grounds where it is best to be respectful of classes and operations.
The building was moved about half a mile to save it from demolition, making it physical proof of the community's efforts to protect its local history. This relocation in later decades shows how residents have preserved the legacy of early schooling in Hanalei over time.
