Hanalei Beach

Hanalei Beach is a two-and-a-half-mile crescent-shaped stretch of sand on Kauai's north shore with shallow, clear water ideal for swimming. The Hanalei River flows into the bay, creating a large sheltered lagoon, while steep green cliffs and ridges frame the entire coastline.

The beach gained international fame starting in the late 1950s when it appeared in the Hollywood film South Pacific. Its dramatic coastline and natural scenery continued to attract major film productions over the following decades.

The name Hanalei comes from Hawaiian and means 'lei valley,' referencing the flower garlands that once grew abundantly in this area. For generations, local communities have gathered here to fish and travel by water, practices that remain part of daily life for some residents.

The beach has multiple entry points and parking areas scattered along the shore, making it accessible from different directions. Swimming is safest and most comfortable during summer months when waters are calmer; winter brings larger swells and stronger currents.

The eastern bay section transforms during winter months into a premier surfing zone where waves build to impressive heights for experienced riders. Dedicated surfers often time their visits specifically to catch these seasonal swells.
