Spalding House

Spalding House is an art gallery in Makiki Heights featuring multiple exhibition spaces and gardens spread across 3.5 acres. The rooms display contemporary and traditional artworks from different cultures and periods.

The building was constructed in 1925 as a private home for Anna Rice Cooke and transformed into an art museum in 1968 through a bequest from Alice Spalding. This change made it a public space for displaying art collections.

The gallery features rotating exhibitions from local and international artists, weaving Hawaiian traditions together with contemporary artistic work. You can see how this blend of old and new culture comes alive across the rooms.

The site sits on a hillside with stairs and uneven paths, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore. Many parts of the grounds are shaded, but bring sun protection for the open garden areas.

The grounds feature Japanese stroll gardens designed by Reverend K. H. Inagaki between 1928 and 1941. These quiet gardens blend natural beauty with art pieces scattered throughout the terrain.
