Aulani, Disney resort in Kapolei, United States
Aulani is a large beachfront property located in the Ko Olina area on the western shore of Oahu, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from downtown Honolulu. The structure rises 16 stories with rooms facing either the Pacific or a manufactured lagoon.
The property opened in 2011 as the first venture of its kind outside the existing theme parks in Florida and California. Construction took several years and involved shaping an eight-hectare site along the coast.
Traditional Hawaiian elements appear in the carved wooden figures and Polynesian patterns found throughout the grounds, creating a connection to island heritage. Visitors often hear ukulele music drifting through public areas while staff members use Hawaiian words and greetings in their conversations with guests.
The grounds sit about 40 minutes by car from Honolulu Airport, with parking available on site for visitors who rent a vehicle. Most public areas including pools and gardens remain open to day guests not staying at the property.
A large volcanic rock stands in one of the pools and serves as a natural slide for children and adults. The rock was transported from a nearby quarry during construction and integrated into the water feature.
