Hawaii Shingon Mission
Hawaii Shingon Mission, Buddhist temple in Sheridan Street, Honolulu, United States.
The temple features Japanese architectural elements with a steep roof, decorative carvings, and a surrounding platform with railings on three sides.
The temple survived targeted attacks during World War II when many Buddhist temples in Hawaii were vandalized or destroyed due to anti-Japanese sentiment.
The temple served as a community center for Japanese immigrants who worked in sugar plantations, with priests conducting services in Japanese language.
Located at 915 Sheridan Street in Honolulu, the temple maintains its original roof structure despite renovations in 1978 and additions in 1992.
The Hawaii Shingon Mission represents one of only seven temples of this specific architectural design remaining in Hawaii today.
