Shuyak Island State Park, Protected wilderness area in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States.
Shuyak Island State Park is a protected wilderness area in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, covering approximately 47,000 acres of untamed coastline and forest. The landscape consists primarily of dense Sitka spruce stands that spread across the island and reach down to rugged shores where water and land meet.
The island once supported a thriving fishing industry centered around Port William, but this declined when factory vessels made traditional fishing practices uneconomical. Following the collapse of this economic activity, the land transformed into a protected natural preserve.
The four public cabins within the park maintain the traditional Alaskan approach to wilderness accommodation and outdoor living standards.
The island is only accessible by plane or boat, and visitors must bring all their own supplies since no services or stores operate within the park. Proper planning and self-sufficiency are essential for any visit to this remote location.
The waters around the island support a thriving population of sea otters that move through protected channels and inlets. This recovery of wildlife reflects how the land has returned to its natural state since fishing operations ended.
