Russian Orthodox presence in Kodiak dates from 1794, when monks of the Valaam monastery arrived with the Russian mission soon after the settlement was founded. The present church was built in 1945 to replace the previous building, which burned in 1943. Bishop Nicholas of Alaska gave it the status of cathedral in 2001, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
