Vincent Thomas Bridge, Suspension bridge in San Pedro, US.
Vincent Thomas Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning 1847 meters across Los Angeles Harbor, linking San Pedro to Terminal Island with green-painted steel towers rising 111 meters above the water. The roadway hangs from cables anchored on both sides of the channel.
The structure opened on November 15, 1963, replacing ferry service between San Pedro and Terminal Island as the port expanded its cargo operations. It was the first major suspension bridge built in California south of San Francisco Bay.
Local residents recognize the bridge as a representation of San Pedro maritime heritage, with its towers standing as a gateway to Los Angeles Harbor.
The crossing carries State Route 47 traffic and is not open to pedestrians or cyclists, with motor vehicles only. Heavy truck traffic from port terminals dominates the roadway during daytime hours.
In 2005, the structure received blue LED lighting powered by solar panels, marking the first bridge installation worldwide to combine both technologies. The lights outline the towers and cables at night over the dark harbor water.
