Garden Court Apartments, former apartment building located in Los Angeles, California, United States
Garden Court Apartments is a historic apartment building constructed in 1919 on Hollywood Boulevard, designed as a luxury residence for entertainment industry professionals. The structure featured refined interiors with dark wood and elegant furnishings, modern amenities like telephone service and refrigeration, and shared spaces including tennis courts, gardens, a fountain, and a ballroom.
The complex was designed by architect Frank S. Meline and developed by J.E. Ransford in 1919 to create a high-class residence for Hollywood professionals. The building declined from the 1960s onward, suffered deterioration through the 1970s and 1980s, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, but was demolished in 1984 despite its protected status.
The apartments served as a gathering place for movie industry figures who lived and worked in the same building. This concentration of filmmakers and performers made it a hub of Hollywood's early creative energy.
The building no longer exists, having been demolished in 1984. Today the site can only be explored through photographs and historical accounts, with the location on Hollywood Boulevard now occupied by different structures.
The building was notable for its grand entrance hall adorned with caryatids, stone figures that served as architectural supports. These classical details reflected the Beaux-Arts style that embodied Hollywood's early aspirations for refined elegance.
