Woman's Building, Feminist art gallery in downtown Los Angeles, United States
The Woman's Building is an art center housed in a converted industrial structure that features exhibitions and workshops. The spaces accommodate various artistic mediums and collaborative projects among women artists.
Artists Judy Chicago, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, and Arlene Raven founded the space in 1973 as both a school and exhibition venue. The center remained active from 1973 until 1991, shaping the direction of women's art during those decades.
The building served as a gathering place where female artists exhibited their work and learned from one another. Today, the space stands as a reminder of how important dedicated venues for women artists have been.
The location occupies a former factory in downtown, so plan to spend time walking through the interconnected spaces. The works on display rotate with regular exhibitions, so return visits may show different artistic selections.
When the center closed in 1992, many of the women who worked there went on to establish new arts projects elsewhere in the city. Their departure spread the original vision across Los Angeles rather than limiting it to a single location.
