Sunset Cliffs

Sunset Cliffs is a residential neighborhood in San Diego positioned along sandstone cliffs that drop toward the Pacific Ocean. Streets wind through the area, with several spots offering overlooks and direct access down to the shoreline.

Development of the neighborhood began in the early 20th century with planned infrastructure designed to work with the cliff terrain. This initial construction established the layout that defines the area today.

The Kumeyaay people traditionally gathered seafood from the intertidal zones and collected native plants growing throughout the coastal area.

Most people find they need a car to explore the neighborhood, as the hilly terrain makes walking between main points difficult, and parking fills up during peak hours. Arriving early in the day helps secure a spot and provides quieter time at overlooks.

A promontory at the end of Hill Street serves as a frequent wedding venue and a popular spot for ceremony photos. This location has become an informal destination for couples over the years.
