Gamble House, Arts and Crafts residential masterwork in Pasadena, United States.
Gamble House is an Arts and Crafts residence in Pasadena, built entirely from wood with exposed joinery and open ceiling beams. Wide porches wrap around the ground floor, while all rooms receive natural light through large windows and skylights.
Charles and Henry Greene designed the building in 1908 as a winter residence for a wealthy couple from Ohio. The University of Southern California assumed management in 1966 and opened it for guided visits.
The name refers to the family of the Procter & Gamble co-founder, who lived here until 1966. Visitors today can observe the preserved original furnishings and handcrafted Tiffany glass lamps.
Advance reservations for interior tours are required because visitor numbers are limited. Tours take place Tuesday through Sunday and last about an hour.
The architects designed most of the furniture specifically for these rooms, including tables and chairs with the same woodwork as the building. Even light switches and door handles were custom-made as part of the overall concept.
