Hardy Memorial Tower, University building at San Diego State University, United States.
Hardy Memorial Tower is an 11-story structure approximately 119 feet tall (36 meters) located at the corner of Hepner Hall Quad. It contains a carillon system with 204 bells spanning six octaves.
The tower was built in 1931 as a Works Progress Administration project and initially served as the university's first library. It was renamed after President Edward Hardy in 1976.
The carillon installed in 1946 was a gift marking the university's 50th anniversary and honoring students who died in military service. Its bells continue to shape the sonic identity of campus life today.
The tower stands in the northwest corner of Hepner Hall Quad and is easy to locate on campus. The WPA-era murals are visible from outside, and the surrounding area is accessible during university hours.
Two murals from the 1930s were rediscovered inside, including one titled 'NRA Packages'. These works depict the local tuna fishing and canning industry that once formed the economic backbone of San Diego.
