Los Feliz is a residential area in central Los Angeles that stretches between the hills and the eastern edge of Hollywood. Its streets lead to shops along Hillhurst Avenue and Vermont Avenue, while green slopes mark the access to Griffith Park.
José Vicente Féliz received a large land grant from Spanish authorities in 1795, later known as Rancho Los Feliz. In the 1920s residential developments appeared as film workers and families moved here from downtown.
The name recalls the Féliz family, whose ranch once covered this area before it was divided into residential lots. Today you see houses from the 1920s next to cafés, bookstores, and small cinemas that draw a local crowd.
Exploring on foot or by bike along Hillhurst or Vermont reveals small shops, eateries, and an old cinema from the 1920s. Hiking trails begin at the edge of the area and lead into the hills, where viewpoints are within reach.
Walt Disney drew Mickey Mouse in his uncle's garage in this area and developed the first ideas for the character there. The Ennis House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, served as a filming location for movies like Blade Runner.
