University of San Diego, Private Catholic university in Linda Vista, San Diego, US
The University of San Diego is a Catholic institution in Linda Vista on a mesa above Mission Bay in San Diego. The grounds cover 180 acres and include lecture halls, libraries, dormitories and sports facilities in interconnected white buildings.
The institution emerged in 1949 from two separate schools for women and men that taught on the same grounds. Full merger into a coeducational university took place in 1972 after years of shared administration.
The campus is dominated by Spanish Renaissance towers whose blue domes rise above the buildings and give the grounds a distinctive Mediterranean appearance. Students use the terraced courtyards between lecture halls as meeting points and open-air study spaces.
The grounds sit on a hilltop with views over the bay and can be reached through several entrances, most of which are located along Linda Vista Road. Visitors should allow enough time for walks between buildings, as the campus area is extensive.
The library houses a collection of manuscripts from the 15th century that are accessible to researchers and occasionally for guided tours. Some of these texts came from European monasteries and entered the collection through donations.
