Casa Romantica

Casa Romantica is a residence built in Spanish Colonial Revival style perched on a coastal bluff in San Clemente with stucco walls, Mexican tiles, and a distinctive moon gate entrance. The property spreads across several acres with landscaped gardens and overlooks the Pacific Ocean from its elevated setting.

Ole Hanson, former Seattle mayor and founder of San Clemente, constructed this seven-bedroom house between 1927 and 1928 as part of his vision for a Spanish village settlement. The building emerged during a period of rapid coastal development in Southern California.

The site honors the plants that the Acjachmen people once cultivated, connecting visitors to the region's indigenous past through the garden spaces. Today it serves as a cultural hub where concerts, workshops, and educational gatherings reflect how the community gathers and shares knowledge.

An octagonal study tower offers 360-degree views of the coastline and was designed as a personal retreat for the original owner. The handcrafted tiles from Mexico and Italy are visible throughout every room and demonstrate the careful attention to detail in the original design.
