Lakeside, Census-designated place in San Diego County, California
Lakeside is a community in the western foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains in San Diego County, situated among rolling hills, lakes, and woodlands. Three large reservoirs—Lake Jennings, El Capitan Reservoir, and San Vicente Reservoir—shape the character of the area with their waters and outdoor recreation options.
The area was established in 1886 when the El Cajon Valley Land Company purchased land surrounding Lindo Lake and built a major Victorian hotel to attract visitors. Early 1900s development brought horse and automobile racing events that transformed it into a sports destination.
The Kumeyaay people called Lindo Lake "Ha Ptur," meaning circular water in their language, reflecting their deep connection to this place long before settlers arrived. You can still feel this connection today when visiting the lake.
The area offers year-round fishing and water sports opportunities in the three large reservoirs. Spring and fall are the best times to visit when the weather is mild and outdoor activities are most enjoyable.
A racetrack was developed around Lindo Lake in 1904, attracting horse and automobile racing fans to the area. This racing heritage, though less known today, shaped the community's early identity.
