Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, Military air base in Orange County, United States.
Marine Corps Air Station El Toro was a military air base in Orange County, California, with four long runways and numerous hangars for fighter jets and helicopters. The compound included administrative buildings, repair workshops, storage facilities, and housing units for service members and their families, spread across thousands of acres.
The base was established in 1942 when the military acquired land from a large ranch to create a West Coast hub for operations in the Pacific War. Over the following decades, it served as home to numerous aircraft squadrons until its final closure in 1999, when the land was released for civilian use.
The station took its name from a nearby range of hills and became the center of a long public debate in the 1990s about how to repurpose the land after closure. Residents argued intensely over plans for housing, a civilian airport, or a large park, shaping the future of the region for years.
The site was decontaminated after closure and later redeveloped into residential and commercial areas, so little of the original facility remains visible today. Visitors interested in aviation history can find photographs and documents from the base's active years in archives and local museums.
Parts of the runways were used in the filming of several Hollywood movies, including action scenes with speeding cars and taking off planes. After redevelopment, the former military site became home to sports facilities, schools, and a large shopping center that carries the base's former name in its branding.
