CHARA array, Optical telescope array on Mount Wilson, California, US

The CHARA array consists of six telescopes with one-meter mirrors arranged across Mount Wilson to function as a single high-resolution observation system.

Construction of the CHARA array began in 1996 with funding from the National Science Foundation and Georgia State University, reaching completion in 2003.

The facility contributes to astronomical research by enabling direct measurements of star diameters, surface features, and binary star systems across the universe.

Each telescope collects light through vacuum tubes to a central facility where beams combine with precision accuracy of less than one micron.

The array measures details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds, equivalent to observing a nickel from 10,000 miles away.
