Mount Lowe, Mountain peak in Los Angeles County, California.

Mount Lowe is a summit on the southern fold of the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, reaching 1,699 metres, about 86 metres above the surrounding terrain. It was renamed for Professor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, who built the Mount Lowe Railway to its foot in 1896. The peak rises 1.4 km southwest of San Gabriel Peak, the higher neighbour at 1,868 metres.

Originally named Oak Mountain, the peak was renamed for Professor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, credited as the first person to set foot on it and plant the American flag. Andrew McNally, the Chicago map printer and Altadena summer resident, made the name official by promising to print "Mount Lowe" on all his maps. The mountain became the upper terminus of the Alpine Division of the Mount Lowe Railway, incorporated by Lowe as the Pasadena and Mt. Wilson Railroad Co. after rights of way to Mount Wilson could not be secured.

The Mount Lowe Tavern at Crystal Springs, below the summit, operated from 1895 to 1936 and drew visitors who rode mule trails such as the "Mount Lowe Eight", a figure-eight route from the tavern up to the summit and down through Castle Canyon to Echo Mountain. The mountain's name was fixed when Andrew McNally, the Chicago map printer and Altadena summer resident, promised to print "Mount Lowe" on all his maps.

Mount Lowe is reached from Echo Mountain or from the Chaney Trail, following a fire road graded over the old railway right-of-way. The summit stands at 1,699 metres, 86 metres above the surrounding terrain, with San Gabriel Peak rising 1.4 km to the southwest. The route climbs through mountain slopes, so plan for a sustained ascent rather than a short walk.

The summit is not the railway's terminus: Mount Lowe was the upper stop of the Alpine Division, while the line's foot lay below, and the Mount Lowe Tavern stood at Crystal Springs beneath the peak, operating from 1895 to 1936. Trails still leave the summit area, including the old Mount Lowe Eight mule route that made a figure-eight from the tavern up to the top and down through Castle Canyon toward Echo Mountain.
