The Desert Botanical Garden spans 55 acres within Papago Park, containing more than 21,000 plants representing 4,582 species from desert regions worldwide.
Swedish botanist Gustaf Starck initiated the garden's establishment in the 1930s by placing a sign reading 'Save the Desert', leading to its foundation in 1937.
The garden's Webster Auditorium, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a central venue for educational programs about desert ecosystems.
Five thematic trails guide visitors through different plant collections, including specialized sections for cacti, succulents, and native desert wildflowers.
The garden's Cactarium maintains 10,350 specimens across 1,350 taxa, with particular emphasis on the Opuntia subfamily and rare desert plant species.
