Tempe Butte

Tempe Butte is a volcanic summit in Tempe rising to approximately 1,500 feet, composed of andesite rock formations that create the distinctive slope. Native desert plants including saguaro and barrel cactus grow across the butte's surface.

The Hohokam people left petroglyphs and pottery fragments across the butte, indicating long-standing occupation of the area. European settlers in the 1870s named the summit after the Vale of Tempe in Greece.

The 60-foot gold letter 'A' mounted on the butte by Arizona State University in 1965 reflects the university's connection to this landmark and its role in campus traditions. This bright marker has become a familiar symbol for students and visitors alike.

Multiple hiking trails lead to the summit with views across the Arizona State University campus and Tempe downtown area. The routes vary in difficulty, so wear good shoes and bring water for the walk.

Sun Devil Stadium, home to ASU football games, sits nestled within the natural contours of the butte itself. This arrangement integrates modern sports architecture directly with the geological features of the summit.
