The city takes its name from an Irish veterinarian who founded it and transformed the area through irrigation channels. Visitors today recognize the area mainly for its technology companies and wide streets lined with palm trees.
Visitors find several parks throughout the city with walking trails and sports facilities open year-round. During hot summer days, an early morning or late afternoon visit works better.
Each December, local engineers build a Christmas tree about 35 feet (10 meters) tall using tumbleweeds gathered from the surrounding desert. The unusual tree is then placed and illuminated in the plaza outside city hall.
