The hotel was built by Dr. Alexander Chandler, the city's founder, as part of his vision for a beautiful planned resort town and opened in 1913. It was one of Arizona's first buildings constructed with reinforced concrete and quickly became popular with wealthy winter visitors.
The hotel takes its name from Marcos de Niza, a Spanish friar who traveled through the Southwest region centuries before. This naming choice linked the building to the area's past and gave visitors a sense of connection to local history.
