Emory Peak

Emory Peak is the highest summit in the Chisos Mountains within Big Bend National Park, standing at 2,385 meters. The mountain features distinct ecological zones that change as you climb, from desert scrub at lower elevations to pine and oak forests near the top.

The peak was named after William Hemsley Emory, who led the United States Boundary Survey expedition in 1852 through this region. His work mapping the border between the United States and Mexico established his connection to the Texas landscape.

The mountain stands as a natural landmark for local communities, drawing hikers and naturalists to explore its diverse ecological zones.

The trail requires a round-trip hike of about 10 miles with sturdy footwear and plenty of water for the journey. Weather conditions can shift quickly at altitude, so being prepared for temperature drops and strong winds is essential.

From certain western viewpoints, the peak appears as a subtle elevation above surrounding mountains, contrasting with Casa Grande's more dominant profile.
