J. C. Penney–Chicago Store Building, United States historic place
The J. C. Penney-Chicago Store Building is a large brick structure in downtown Tucson, Arizona, originally built in 1903 to house a furniture company before becoming a department store. The building displays Italianate design features such as decorative window trims and a solid, straightforward form typical of early twentieth-century retail spaces.
The building was constructed in 1903 as a furniture store and later housed various retail operations, including J. C. Penney starting in 1942 and subsequently a department store from El Paso. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 for its historical importance.
The building served as a gathering place where families shopped for clothing and household goods, shaping local commercial life for decades. Its downtown location made it a central hub where people from across the city came together.
The building is located in downtown Tucson on Congress Street and is easily reached on foot while exploring the main commercial district. The exterior remains clearly visible from the street, though the interior has undergone substantial renovation in recent years.
The building was long the last retail space in Tucson with a completely original vintage interior from the early twentieth century before being substantially gutted between 2020 and 2022. This renovation removed most original interior features such as stamped tin ceilings and woodwork that had documented the period.
