Arizona State Prison Complex – Eyman, a state prison for men located in Florence, Arizona
The Arizona State Prison Complex Eyman is a maximum-security prison in Florence, Arizona, made up of several separate units that each operate at different security levels. The grounds cover a wide area of desert land and include housing blocks, administrative buildings, and support facilities spread across the site.
The complex was built in the late 1980s and opened in 1991 to ease overcrowding in older Arizona prisons and hold high-risk inmates. Its remote location in the desert was a deliberate choice to support the highest level of containment.
The prison is one of the largest employers in Florence, and many residents of the town work there. Its presence is woven into everyday life in ways that go beyond what most visitors would expect from a correctional facility.
Anyone entering the facility should be ready for thorough security checks at the entrance, including bag inspections and identity verification. Following all posted rules is important, as not doing so can result in being turned away.
Inside the complex sits the Browning Unit, which serves as a death row housing area where inmates are held in individual cells under extreme security conditions. It is one of the few places in Arizona where such tight isolation is maintained for a small group of people.
