Williams Air Force Base, Military air base in Mesa, Arizona
Williams Air Force Base was a military air installation in Mesa, Arizona, featuring aircraft hangars, pilot training facilities, and maintenance buildings across a large area. The installation operated as a training center for pilots before changing its operational focus.
The base opened in 1941 and operated as a pilot training facility for more than 50 years until its closure in 1993. During its operational period, it became one of the most important training centers in the Air Force.
The facility bears the name of First Lieutenant Charles Linton Williams, a pilot who died in a 1927 aircraft accident in Hawaii. His memory became part of the base's identity and honored military service.
The former military site now operates as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport with Arizona State University facilities on the grounds. Some areas remain accessible for visitors, while others serve academic or aviation purposes.
One quarter of all United States Air Force pilots trained here during the base's operational years. This exceptional concentration made it one of the most consequential training centers in Air Force history.
