Prada Marfa, Art installation near Valentine, Texas, US
Prada Marfa is a permanently sealed sculpture along U.S. Route 90 in Jeff Davis County that mimics a luxury boutique with storefront windows displaying shoes and handbags behind glass. The white facade reproduces the look of an upscale retail space, while shelves and lighting inside replicate typical sales elements, though the building measures roughly 15 by 25 feet (4.6 by 7.6 meters) and no one can enter.
Artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset completed the work in October 2005 with support from Art Production Fund and Ballroom Marfa, deliberately choosing the remote location for the project. After several vandalism incidents, restoration efforts were carried out to preserve the original appearance and keep the structure sealed.
Visitors often pull over to take photographs and pose in front of the white facade, turning the site into a roadside attraction for travelers crossing the region. Some leave small tokens or messages nearby, though the building itself remains sealed and inaccessible to everyone who stops.
The installation stands roughly 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers) northwest of Valentine along U.S. Route 90 with no set hours, as no one can enter the building. Visitors may photograph the exterior anytime but should bring water, since no facilities exist nearby and the nearest gas stations and stores are in Valentine or Marfa about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east.
All displayed shoes are made exclusively for the right foot, making any actual purchase impossible and establishing the work as purely something to look at. This deliberate choice underscores the conceptual nature of the project and highlights the contrast between merchandise presentation and actual commercial function.
