Academia Estadounidense de la Lengua, Language academy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The Academia Estadounidense de la Lengua is a language organization dedicated to research and preservation of Spanish in Central America. It works on documenting and standardizing Spanish usage while recognizing the regional characteristics of the language as it is spoken in Honduras.
The institution was founded on December 28, 1948, with twelve founding members including Esteban Guardiola as its first director. The original library suffered severe damage during Hurricane Mitch in 1998, marking a turning point in the Academy's mission.
The Academy works to document and recognize the words and expressions that Hondurans use in their daily lives, reflecting how the Spanish language evolves in this region.
The organization arranges conferences, workshops, and research activities focused on Spanish language development and standardization. Visitors can participate in these events to learn more about how the language is studied and preserved in the region.
In 2001, the Academy contributed approximately 1,950 Honduran terms to the Royal Spanish Academy dictionary, documenting words used uniquely in the country. This substantial collection demonstrates how Central American countries shape and expand the broader Spanish language.
