Edificio Otero, National monument in central Cali, Colombia.
Edificio Otero is a four-story building featuring Art Deco architecture with detailed facade ornamentation and large windows distributed across its structure. It stands on Calle 12 between Carreras 4 and 5 in the central area.
Edificio Otero was completed in 1926 by architects Borrero and Ospina, marking a turning point in downtown Cali's architectural direction. Its Art Deco style represented a departure from the colonial structures that had previously defined the city center.
The building once housed the Hotel Europa and Gambrinus restaurant, serving as a central gathering place where people conducted business and spent their social time. These establishments shaped how residents experienced downtown life in the city.
The building is easily accessible in central Cali and can be admired from the street to study its facade details and architectural style. Since it currently functions as office space, be aware that interior access may be limited.
In 1970 the building faced demolition but was saved through protests by architecture faculty from Universidad del Valle and local residents. This event turned it into a symbol of resistance against losing Cali's architectural heritage.
