Lac de Urrá

Represa Urrá I is a large reservoir in northern Colombia created by damming the Sinú River, spreading across an expansive water body held by concrete structures. The impounded water fills valleys and creates a significant water feature that shapes the regional landscape.

The project emerged in the 1990s from the need to generate electricity for the region and was completed in the early 2000s. This development fundamentally changed how water has been managed and used in the area since then.

Local communities have adapted their way of life to the presence of the reservoir, with the river and its surroundings remaining central to their connection with the land. The place has become part of their everyday geography, even as their traditional relationships with nature have shifted.

The best way to view the reservoir is from vantage points along the shores or from access roads near Tierralta. Visitors should expect local transportation options and keep in mind that the area is rural and less developed.

The system regulates massive water flows that discharge during heavy rainfall, playing an important role in controlling floods across the region. This makes it more than just a power-generating facility, as it manages natural water movement year-round.
