Esterillos, Pacific beach in Central Costa Rica.
Esterillos is a Pacific beach with three sections: Oeste, Centro, and Este, each with its own character. The dark volcanic sand runs along the coast with palm trees lining the back, creating different zones for swimmers and surfers.
The area developed from a remote coastal location into a recognized surf destination beginning in the 1990s. This shift brought infrastructure and regular visitors to what had been quiet, largely undiscovered shores.
Local families gather at Esterillos during weekends to enjoy traditional beach activities while surfers practice their sport in the consistent waves.
The beach is roughly 120 kilometers from the international airport and is reached via Routes 27 and 34. A toll station along the way accepts multiple payment methods, and access to the shore is straightforward.
At low tide along the north end of Esterillos Oeste, a bronze mermaid statue emerges from the dark water. This hidden figure surprises visitors who explore the area when the waters recede.
