Heredia Canton

Heredia Canton is an administrative area in Heredia Province organized into five districts: Heredia, Mercedes, San Francisco, Ulloa, and Varablanca. The region sits at varying elevations typical of Costa Rica's central highlands.

This canton emerged from Costa Rica's administrative reorganization in 1848, when the country restructured its regional governance divisions. This restructuring established the foundation for current local administration.

Each district celebrates local festivals throughout the year with traditional music, food markets, and community gatherings that shape daily life for residents.

The area is well served by National Routes 1 and 3 and a railway station that connects to neighboring regions. This transportation network makes it easy to travel between districts and explore the surrounding countryside.

The Varablanca district contains sections of Braulio Carrillo National Park with landscapes of the central mountain range. Visitors can explore forest areas and highland terrain that rarely appear in typical tourist guides.
