Aserrí Canton

Aserrí Canton spreads across a mountainous area of San José Province, covering 168 square kilometers of rolling hills and higher elevation terrain. The Poás River marks its eastern boundary, while the land sits at roughly 1,373 meters above sea level.

This area was originally part of the Huetar Kingdom, which flourished from the 3rd to 16th centuries before Spanish contact. Spanish explorer Juan de Cavallón arrived in the territory in 1561, marking the beginning of colonial influence.

Making traditional tamales is woven into daily life here, with families and small producers keeping this culinary practice alive. You'll find this skill and dedication reflected in the local food culture and community gatherings.

The canton is organized into seven administrative districts connected by national routes including Route 209, Route 217, and Route 312. These roads form the main transportation network for moving through and around the territory.

The Piedra de Aserrí is a distinctive rock formation in the Escazú mountain range linked to a local legend about Witch Zárate. This stone holds a place in the landscape and local storytelling tradition that visitors may encounter while exploring the highlands.
