Pannekoek, Rural zone in Bandabou, Curaçao
Pannekoek is a rural zone in the northwestern part of Curaçao that developed from three former plantation areas. The region relies on nearby Soto for most services and supplies, though it maintains its own small local businesses.
The area began as Plantation Pannekoek, founded in the early 18th century under the original name Kleine Kloof. The plantation lands gradually transformed into a diverse settlement with multiple ways of making a living.
After slavery ended, local people turned to fishing and farming to make their living. Chinese families became important to community life, opening shops and restaurants that still serve residents today.
Visitors should expect a rural setting where most services are found in nearby Soto rather than locally. It is helpful to plan ahead or bring supplies if you intend to spend extended time in the area.
The main house from the original plantation was transformed into a campsite and activity center in 1967, now serving visitors with outdoor programs. This adaptive reuse project shows how historical structures can gain new life for community use.
