Chilpancingo, State capital in Guerrero, Mexico
Chilpancingo is a capital in the state of Guerrero, located in western Mexico and serving as the seat of government for the region. Streets rise and fall with the slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur, while public buildings group around the central square.
The settlement was founded in the late 16th century and grew through its position on trade routes between the Pacific coast and the interior. Administrative importance increased during the 19th century when it became the governing center of Guerrero.
The town maintains its connection to regional cooking, where local markets offer fresh ingredients from the surrounding valleys and small restaurants prepare traditional dishes. Holidays bring street processions and music performances, with families gathering in the central squares.
Buses run regularly to Acapulco and the national capital, with travel times varying depending on road conditions. Streets in the center are mostly level, while outer neighborhoods have steeper slopes.
The name comes from the Nahuatl word for dry wasp nest and recalls the pre-Spanish settlement of the area. The surrounding mountains create a microclimate that brings cooler temperatures than the nearby coastal region.
