Tehuacalco

Tehuacalco, Archaeological site in Guerrero, Mexico.

Description

Tehuacalco is an archaeological site near Chilpancingo spread across a large hilltop area with nineteen structures in total. These include pyramids, open plazas, and a ball court, all positioned across the uneven terrain.

History

The Yope people built this ceremonial center between 400 and 1100 CE, reaching its development peak during the period when Toltec influence spread through the region. This timeframe marks the site's most important growth.

Culture

The site's layout aligns with the four cardinal directions, showing how the Yope people connected their daily life to the sky and farming seasons. You can see this intentional arrangement as you walk through the different areas, revealing how much celestial knowledge mattered to the community.

Practical

You can reach the site by taking a bus from Chilpancingo to Tierra Colorada followed by a short taxi ride to the archaeological area. The paths are partly steep and uneven, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you.

Did you know?

The structures were built using boulders, flat stones, and red clay in a technique specifically designed to resist the region's frequent earthquakes. This engineering shows the technical knowledge the Yope people possessed.
