Sunset Chapel, Private chapel in Acapulco, Mexico
Sunset Chapel is a private chapel in Acapulco built on a peninsula with a geometric concrete form that echoes the granite rocks around it. The structure sits among the hillside boulders and blends into the natural terrain through its sculptural design.
The chapel was completed in 2011 by BNKR Arquitectura and serves both wedding ceremonies and memorial services. The project responded to the challenge of creating a religious space within this rocky hillside landscape.
The chapel brings together contemporary design and the natural surroundings, creating a setting where visitors experience religious moments within the landscape. The building integrates its hilltop position so that the ocean and surrounding terrain become part of the spiritual experience.
Access to the building involves climbing stairs among the boulders, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea. The best time to visit is late afternoon when sunlight highlights the chapel's geometric form and ocean views.
The chapel sits on pillars several meters above ground to preserve the existing trees on the site. This elevated approach creates an open space beneath the structure where vegetation thrives while keeping ocean views unobstructed.
